In The Autumn

In October when the tree leaves fall,
It is a metaphor to all
Of how we too age over time
From budding leaf to full-blown prime
To face at last our mortal ending
As youth springs forth to new beginning.

It is a cycle known too
with many stories sad to tell;
So as the leaves fall down outside,
Set aside your human pride
And make your life one worth the living
By gentleness, restraint and giving.

So when the generation coming
Views your life and makes a summing,
You will be a memory dear
And never be forgotten here;
And in the life that is to come
You’ll hear the savior say, “Well done.”
